FTP

Answers many questions about FTP. (File Transfer Protocol) Which are the most recommended programs to upload your files to the server with along with configurations needed.

Your FTP address is: ftp.yourdomain.com or com.au Hostname: Use either IP address as supplied or ftp.yourdomain.com once delegated Login and username as supplied at sign up

If your new to ftp we have some basic help with links to free ftp clients here

How do I gain FTP access to my site?
First, get the best FTP program on the Internet, which in our humble opinion is CuteFTP. You can download it at: http://www.cuteftp.com wsftp (see below) is another excellent program.
After it's installed, run the program (double click on the yellow icon), and then click Add Folder - this is where you will store your FTP site info. Then click Add Site. In the panel that comes up, enter a name - call it anything you want - ftp.yourdomain.com.au. Then in Host Address, put: ftp.yourdomain.com.au. (Obviously if the extension is NOT .com.au - if it's .com or .edu or whatever, you would use the appropriate extension) In User ID, put your main Username and then in Password, carefully type your password - I say carefully because it will be masked, so you won't be able to read it - this password is CASE SENSITIVE!
Now click OK in the lower left of the panel, and you will see your domain name in the right hand panel - highlight it and click Connect - lower right part of panel. If all goes well, the program will establish an FTP connection with your site and take you to the htdocs/userid directory. Now click on and open the public html folder This is the right place to put your index.html file and all your other web files. This is where cpanel will install the forum and other scripts for you also.

What is FTP

FTP is File Transfer Protocol, an internet protocol used to transfer
materials over the Internet. It is very fast, very efficient, and very
reliable.

How do I access my site to edit it?

We will supply you with a password & username for access to your web site directory. We will also give you basic instructions on the use of ftp software or you can follow this small tutorial above and below.

Information on how WS_FTP and CuteFTP software works, links to free download sites, how to set it up to work with various Web servers.

What is FTP software?
FTP software allows you to upload html files from the hard drive on your computer to your Web server. You can also use FTP software to download html files from your Web site and to edit/delete files on the Web server (such as changing names of html files)

Where can I get it?
You can download it for free. We recommend either CuteFTP or WS_FTP, however both only work on Windows 95/98 and NT. Macintosh users need to download Fetch

Download CuteFTP
Download WS_FTP
Download Fetch

How do I set up the FTP software?

Advanced users:
If you are advanced user you'll just need to know the following (a huge tutorial follows for everyone else!):
1.   Set host name as ftp.yourdomain (ie ftp.yourbusiness..com  DO NOT use host name www.yourdomain.com)
2.   User ID and passwords, as provided by Ezi Hosting in  the email sent to you when you bought the service (if you have lost the codes please contact us and request them to be sent again).
3.   Set login type to Normal and transfer type to Autodetect

Everybody else:
Once you download an FTP package and set it up, you can run the program and you will see a window like this one (example is WS_FTP):

WSFTP interface

HEY! I can see everyone elses directory, is this normal?

Have no fret. Just as in http on a web browser you can view others peoples websites and FTP directories just as everyone can view your directory or website. Only those on your physical server can see your ftp directory though! Consider them close neighbors. No-one can alter your directory and you cannot alter theirs because of server permissions set in the server setup.

If you wish to have total privacy of your directory tree, then we recommend that you use an ftp client like WSFTP and when you enter your server you will be in the htdocs directory. Click the green arrow on top of your directory tree to back out of it one level. You at that point will see many other directories. Find yours in the long list and simply left click on it once to highlight it, then right click to bring up the WSFTP menu sustem and select chmod. You will assign 771 permission which is

owner = read, write, execute
group = read, write, execute
other = execute

that equals to 771 By default the server sets permissions to 755
so if you want total privacy change it to 771

The reason full viewing is allowed is that to allow navigation through the server by webmasters. They perhaps need to go to the /var directory to see some stats or the "raw logs" directory to view their server logs to determine script errors.

If we blocked read access to those directories then many programs the web sites today use simply wouldn't function therefor a default 755 permission is set.

This is not a security issue and is fully used like this on many many networks. We sure wouldn't be in business if it was. :)

How can I tell if a stack or park is answering to my account?

This is a simple process. If you have registered the domain name you wish to stack and have provided the host and dns information of

ns.ocservers.net 216.73.96.10 and ns2.ocservers.net 216.73.98.10

email dnsadmin@ezihosting.com to have your record added

If you haven't registered the new domain name yet you MUST do this. If you have already registered the domain you MUST modify the information where you registered it to reflect the above host information.

The domain name should have propagated the internet within 72 hours to finally find our network. The way to test this to obtain an IRC client to connect to the IRC network.
For info on getting an IRC client please go to
MIRC.COM

Once you have chosen to connect to one of their chat servers you will get a main login page.

Look at the bottom of the page in the IRC client program and type the following. ( substitute newdomain.com for yours and NO www)

/dns yourdomain.com

what you should see is something similar to what you see below...
The following is a DNS resolve on Ezi Hosting. It shows the static IP address of our account on the network. It doesn't show the ezihosting dns numbers but only the IP number that we assigned YOU for your main account. Consult your access email for YOUR static IP address.

Transcript from MIRC DNS resolve..

We typed in /dns Ezi Hosting.com
and this is what comes up. It shows OUR private static IP address that is unique to our site, just as YOURS will show up when you try it with your domain name that you want stacked or your main account's domain name.

NOTE: You have only 1 static ip address and all of your extra domain names will use the one assigned. They are shared amongst your stacks and parks.

Remember, we typed in the command /dns Ezi Hosting.com
and the following results came up

*** Ezi Hosting sets mode: +i
-
*** Looking up Ezi Hosting.com
-
*** Resolved Ezi Hosting.com to 216.169.96.189

How do I gain FTP access to my site?

First off, get one of the best FTP programs on the internet, which in
our opinion is WS_FTP.

Now using this FTP client is
a BREEZE! and even allows you to
CHMOD (setting permissions)You
will need to download WS_FTP

Get it here
IPSWITCH.COM

Once you have installed the program select from the right hand
side of the menu "NEW" and you should have the following
box below. Input your access information. Where the
address ftp.username.com is you may have to use your static ip
address numbers instead until your domain name is functioning.

Then when you connect you will see the following box.

Please notice on the left is your local hard drive where You have
saved your website files to. On the right is the remote v-server you
have purchased from Ezi Hosting.COM

You will place your files in the public html folder with the rest of them you see there.
Simply highlight the files on the left and press the arrow key to
transfer to your server. And that's it!

CGI-BIN... this is the pace to place all perl scripts and cgi's
although cgi scripts can be run from anywhere on your server. Perl
HAS to be run from this cgi-bin area.

IMAGES... is where you can place all your image files as to not
clutter your main directory structure. It contains images now that is
used by your feedback forms, guest book etc...

ANONFTP.. this is to setup your server for file transfers between
people who you will allow to upload and download files from your
system with using secret access information. They may log in
using anonymous login. Remember you need to set permissions.
Consult the CGI GROUP in the FAQ to understand how
permissions are set.

CGI-SCRIPTS... is a place for you to place a few scripts for later
use. Kind of like a holding bin. :)

HOME... this folder is VERY important. Never delete this folder. It
is responsible for holding your .redirect and .forward files as well
as auto responder messages. All these are covered in the FAQ
under the EMAIL GROUP in the FAQ

How does a passworded FTP account work under my master account?

Please do not confuse this with your main FTP access to your master domain V-Server. This is how PASSWORDED FTP ACCOUNTS created for you within your server react.

You may opt to use only FTP accounts and NOT stack or park any domains. This is OK as well. Proceed to the utilities menu and request your free passworded FTP account. The folders CANNOT be created by you. They MUST be created by our software so each FTP account created has its own password and user name.

the urls will be listed as such

http://www.yourdomain.com/ftp-account-name

Access to it will be as follows...

ftp.yourdomain.com
ftp-account-username
password

Voila! You will be transported into the FTP account.

Please be aware as well that when entering your V-Server from your main master account you will be able to VIEW only the ftp account directory and the files within.

The reason for this is becasue you did not enter it using the assigned user name and password. Remembe, the FTP account received a separate user name and password. So you holding the master account, you are able to view the files within. If the need to modify the contents arises, you need to log into the separate ftp account using the provided information for it.

This is the same with any MASTER ACCOUNTS created on the physical server that you reside. Take note that it is a VIRTUAL server and you share it with 99 other master accounts. All master accounts have a unique password adn username to enter theri v-server. If it has a unique username and you have not entered using that unique username and password, you will not be able to write to anything. This means deleting or modifying the folders or contents within. You will be able to VIEW only.

So the lesson learned here is that
You MUST enter the FTP account through its username and password to edit the files it comtains. As well even though YOU can back out of your master account and view other V-Servers you cannot modify or alter their contents. The backward navigation is needed for master accounts to access public areas of the physical server you are on.. things like "raw logs" etc...

The user of an FTP account CANNOT back out of their directory tree to snoop in the master account because quite frankly they do not have the many services YOU have with your master account. Therefore; they need not exit their directory. FTP ACCOUNT HOLDERS can run CGI or perl within their own accounts. There is no need for you to load their cgi in YOUR master accounts cgi-bin as they have this capability BUT you can control what your FTP accounts do so you may opt to only allow the use of CGI from your system and they would have to send the script to you for approval. The choice is yours.

I have 4 domains that I want to move over, do I need FTP accounts?

This is a choice you can make and depends what your needs are.

You first begin by purchasing a v-server for your MASTER domain no matter which way you look at it.. Min size for this is 600mb virtual server

This will be the main site you conduct business from and this will also be the domain in which ALL email on that v-server will flow through.

You then stack or park your other domains to pull up 1 site (your master site)

You can leave it this way if you do not have other websites and only have your own website and multiple domains. If you need separate sites this is where having FTP accounts created after the stacks or parking has been done on your v-server.
After creating your FTP accounts you MUST make sure that your domain names, where ever you registered them are POINTING to our network.

ns.ocservers.net 216.73.96.10 and ns2.ocservers.net 216.73.98.10

email dnsadmin@ezihosting.com to have your record added
You will know they are pointed to our network when you type in the domain name and it loads up your main site. This indicates that the stack or park request was successful. This will only occur if you have requested the stack or park be done first.
Again this is requested from our utilities menu.

Proceed to upload the appropriate site for the domain name into it's separate FTP account and then proceed to generate your JAVASCRIPT REDIRECTION code or modify your htaccess file available here.
JAVASCRIPT
Follow the directions closely and you will see that the redirection not only redirects the visitor to the ftp account on your v-server but re-writes the url to only show the stacked or parked domain name. :)

The slightly more complicated .htaccess method
HTSTACK

You may opt to use only FTP accounts and NOT stack or park any domains. This is OK as well. Proceed to the utilities menu and request your free passworded FTP account.
the we urls will be listed as such

http://www.yourdomain.com/ftp-account-name

Access to it will be as follows...

ftp.yourdomain.com
ftp-account-username
password

Voila! You will be transported into the FTP account.

Please be aware as well that when entering your V-Server from your main account you will be able to VIEW only the ftp account directory. This is the same with any created directory on the physical server that you reside. If it has a unique user name and you have not entered using that unique user name you will NOT be able to write or delete to the folder or account. You MUST enter the FTP account through its user name and password to edit.

The user of an FTP account cannot back out of their directory tree to snoop in the master account because quite frankly they do not have the many services YOU have with the master account therefore, they need not exit their directory.

What does unlimited ftp sites update mean?

This means that you have access to your site via FTP over the
Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can "upload" files to
your site - in other words, transfer files from your computer to the
Ezi Hosting web server on the Internet - and you can also
"download" files from your site - in other words, transfer files from
your site on the Ezi Hosting web server, to your computer

What services does an FTP account or Stacked account have?

First off a domain stack if it is NOT java redirected to an FTP account to make it a virtual domain, will not have any properties other than bringing up your main site only.

An FTP account on the other hand that is either JUST and ftp account alone or a FTP account that has a domain name stacked and redirected (a virtual domain) to it will contain only the following properties..

FTP accounts (virtual ftp accounts as well)

* 24 hours FTP access
* own bin to place CGI

They do NOT have email servers so your stacked or parked domain pointed to an FTP directory will not have theirname@stackedftp.com They MUST use the main V-Server accounts holders domain name. The same is applicable for a Virtual Domain
