SEO tips 3 – Recommended SEO

This is a 5 part blog about some basic SEO tips. The blogs are divided into 5 separate SEO tips categories ranging from essential do’s to definite don’ts:

This blog is about 1 thumb up SEO tips and strategies you may consider implementing to succeed in SEO.

1. Don’t make you URLs stray from you root

Keep your pages as close as possible to the root directory. www.you.com/page.html is better than www.you.com/your-directory/your-directory/your-directory/page.html. SEO Tips – keep pages close to your root directory…

2. Utilise your keyword meta tag

Meta tags are great to show bots what your web site is all about. Your keyword meta tag tells bots what you think are the main keywords on your page. However, this is pretty useless in isolation. You need to follow up your keyword meta tag with action including actually using your keywords correctly in your page content.  SEO Tips – use your keyword meta tag…

3. Utilise your description meta tag

Include your keyword in your description meta tag. You can use it 2 or 3 times; perhaps in different variations. Again, this is useless if you don’t have your keyword managed within your page contents. SEO Tips – put your keyword in your description meta tag several times…

4. Set your a language

Utilise your a language meta tag particularly if you have a language other than English. The less recognised the language, the more important this meta tag becomes. SEO Tips – use your language meta tag…

5. Pick a few secondary keywords

After you have optimised your site for your main keyword, you can start on optimising the page for some secondary keywords. Make sure you do not make these as prominent as your main keyword for fear of confusing Google. A word density of no more that 1.5% is recommended. SEO Tips – optimise for secondary keywords…

6. Try to use some synonyms

Using synonyms is a good way to expend your content and keep it focussed. You can look at Latent Semantic Indexing for more detailed information on this. So if you sell cars, don’t be holding back on using synonyms like “vehicle”, “auto-mobile”, “auto”, “sedan”, “coupé” or whatever is appropriate for your content. SEO Tips – use synonyms of your keyword…

7. Pick the right domain type

There is some evidence that a .com domain outperforms a .pro or .biz domain (all other things being equal). There is also some evidence that a .com.au may outperform a .com domain if your content is Australian focussed. SEO Tips – give some consideration to your domain type…

8. Separate your words in your domain name with hyphens

“wesellapples” doesn’t mean much to a bot. “we-sell-apples” look a lot better in bot language and the bot will recognise your keyword “apples” more easily. Hyphens ( – ) are generally there denoting the end of a word. Underscores ( _ ) on the other hand are often seen as part of a word. SEO Tips – use hyphens to separate your words…

9. Separate your words in your URLs with hyphens

The same principle applies here. Use hyphens to separate your words within your URL. For example, www.you.com/we-sell-apples/apple-R-us.html. SEO Tips – separate your keywords in your URLs…

10. Write many, but short pages

Very long pages load slowly which is bad for visitors and therefore bad for Google optimisation. You will also find it hard to manage your “Word Density” when you have a lot of content on one page. So if you genuinely have a lot of content, consider splitting this up in several pages. If your page is over 50KBs then start thinking linking.  SEO Tips – keep the size of your page manageable…

11. Use transcripts for none readable files

As we all know, search engine bots can’t understand what an image is all about or a screen-cast or Flash so let Google know by including a transcript of what your element is all about and obviously use your keywords as appropriate. SEO Tips – transcripts to explain your content to bots…
