Changing ownership of your domain name

If you sell your business, you may also have to transfer ownership of your domain name(s). Unfortunately, the rules and regulations set by the governing body auDA make this a little bit more complex than just changing your contact details or transferring the domain name to a different registrar. See more details: 2011-03 – Transfers (Change of Registrant) Policy. The domain name registration will actually be cancelled and a new registration under the new name will be initiated. This change of ownership includes 2 years registration for the new registrant.

The most important thing to know is that you MUST have access to the domain’s admin email address. The current registrant (the owner of the domain name and the registered administrator) will receive a confirmation email asking them to confirm the change of ownership. So if you do not have access to this “admin email”, your change of ownership will fail.

If you do have access to the Admin email you can proceed.

Please note that a  attracts a  once-off administration charge.
